Requirements

A day in the life of a Head of Research & Development

As a Head of R&D, you’ll be incorporating both finance and corporate tax best practice into your work, managing a team with STEM background and speaking directly to startup CTO’s. Developing a clear growth strategy for your clients, you won’t have to know how to code but you have to be able to extract the right information as well as presenting this information to the HMRC in clear and concise manner. You will liaise directly with the financial contacts to extract all the financial data you need to put together the financial report to optimise the benefit the client receives.  Delivering high volume reporting (2-3 reports a week), you will have to be savvy in working with tech startups and SME’s.


  • Prepare R&D claim methodologies, write R&D reports and prepare R&D tax relief calculations for submission to HMRC.
  • Work directly with an exciting existing and growing client base within the London technology start up ecosystem.
  • You will be the first point of contact, speak and meet regularly with clients and advise on any technical issues with both clients and HMRC.
  • Establish strong client relationships with both existing and new clients, the latter being key to driving forward this key revenue stream of the business.
  • Manage the overall workflow using our CRM tool
  • Manage the end-to end R&D process as well as a small team.

This is you


  • You’re a qualified ACA/ATT and CTA tax consultant or have equivalent work experience.
  • You've experience in successful R&D tax credit filings with HMRC, EMI schemes and EIS / SEIS tax relief claims.
  • You know how to produce and write technical R&D reports as well as R&D tax relief calculations.
  • You’ve a proven record of working in a UK firm of accountants, startup companies and or SMEs, where a wide range of skills were needed.
  • You are excellent at time management and you thrive in taking on responsibility for overseeing all client requirements of your team.
  • Customer first - you know how to handle multiple client needs and managing workflows.
  • You’re a trusted advisor - you know how to lead a client team and inspire junior staff whilst delegating workload, ensure timely delivery of work and meeting team KPIs.
  • You’re self-motivated with a drive to achieve and a passion to deliver top quality work.
  • You’ve excellent communication skills - in person and written and not the smallest detail goes past you without notice.
